Writing With Abandon

Reflections and ramblings about life as an educator, writer, reader, knitter, and over-thinker. Trying to do the writing only I can do.

On Doing the Writing Only I Can Do

I crack open the notebook I used for the Quoddy Writing Retreat this past August, led by Ralph Fletcher and Georgia Heard. The notebook I haven’t touched since landing back in Miami, even though I made promises — to myself, to my writing group — to set aside time to write. My streak of Tuesdays got away from me sometime in the early fall. Life happened, as they say.

But Ralph told me that writing will always wait for you. If writing is important, it will come back to you. The muse will come knocking.

I hope writing has been patient, as I’ve set her aside these past many months. I hope she doesn’t mind me picking her back up, dusting her off with the fabric at the bottom of my t-shirt.

Because it’s the third Slice of Life challenge I’ll be participating in, and this time around, I have an even larger community doing it with me.

I’m skimming these pages and gems are jumping out at me, quotes from Ralph and Georgia and other published writers. I’ll jot them here, in hopes I can return to them on the days when slicing just feels too hard. Reminding me that I’m in great company.

Do the writing that only you can do.

“Tell your stories. You own everything that happened to you.” – Anne Lamott

Write with abandon.

“It is, really, about heart; about a human being looking at life through her own lens and thinking and feeling it through and then making something – even something very simple – that says something new and truthful – something that reaches out to the reader in a spirit of commiseration.” – George Saunders

“Be you. Be all in. Fall. Get up. Try again.” – Brené Brown

“The bigger the issue, the smaller you write.” – Richard Price

Let the image do the work for you.

Revision is like chiseling away at stone, at clay.

“Revision is not a way to fix a broken piece. It’s a way to honor a great piece.” – Ralph Fletcher

The notebook is a playground.

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” – Joan Didion

It’s with these writers at my back that I embark yet again on this challenge. I will write with abandon, “just have fun with it,” as my dad says. I’ll do the writing only I can do!

Amy, thanks for dusting off the notebook and sharing these quotes. I’m jotting them down in my notebook, too, as inspiration for the gray March mornings when I’m sure to want to abandon Slicing! It’s a gift, how we can start again, with no blame, just a pen and a notebook and our own heart, ready to write. Your post leaves me hopeful that we’re all restarting our writing lives. We got this!

it is just like breathing. You have to do it. These have just been very long breaths. Take your time and breathe into the page. Love you

You had me at Ralph Fletcher and Georgia Heard….I resonate so deeply with your notebook that has gathered dust. My post is essentially about the same idea- the starting and stopping. I appreciate your list of quotes ( I grabbed a few for future inspiration) and connection with the community. That is indeed what brings be back. As a 25 year teacher and now curriculum developer, connecting with like minded people is so uplifting. Thanks.

I love how you personified writing as someone you’re reconnecting with. I completely relate to that feeling-I often jot down great ideas, thinking I’ll return to them later. Thank you for sharing these beautiful quotes with us. I can’t wait to read more!

What a wonderful opportunity to attend that writing retreat! I will admit I am a little jealous. You have a great collection of quotes from your “writing friends!” I agree with the one about writing coming back to you…it always does no matte how long we are away. Happy writing!

What an Day 1 post, Amy. I read this entry three time. I could hear your voice with all of its trepidation and eagerness for the possibilities. I’m glad you turned to Ralph and the others for the company we all need when we write.

Then I thought of writing, “Keep writing. We need your words!” But in reality, even if that’s so very true, you remind me the purpose of doing this. It all comes back to connecting with ourselves. Yes, I do need your words because they inspire me and teach me, but also because they remind me of the gift of your friendship.

Here’s to another year of writing together. I can’t wait!

I saw this yesterday & then lost track of it in my commenting frenzy. I was wondering how the retreat went (because you wrote about it last March) – and then, here it is! The quotes are great & I’ve copied some down as inspiration. Also, I’m wondering about that workshop – was thinking about attending this year. Is it good even if I don’t have a book in mind?

Absolutely it will good! Some of us had projects, some just played around and tried new things. Most worthy was the time set aside to just write, the peer response groups, Ralph and Georgia’s words of wisdom, and the gorgeous backdrop of Lubec, Maine. I hope you go and can’t wait to see what you create there if you do!
