Writing With Abandon

Reflections and ramblings about life as an educator, writer, reader, knitter, and over-thinker. Trying to do the writing only I can do.

Every day, one of my reminders reads: “📸 Delete today’s photos.”

Usually while I eat breakfast, sometime after I’ve done the NYT word games, I search for today’s date in my iPhone photos album and scroll through the photos to see what’s there and what I can delete, if anything.

The reminder started back in 2024 when my iPhone storage was getting close to capacity. I realized I had multiples of many photos, random videos that I didn’t need, and way too many unnecessary screenshots (especially from during the pandemic). Instead of deleting photos in one big overhaul, I decided to make it more sustainable by going day by day, like a filing system or a 5-year diary.

Now that’s it’s been over a year, I often don’t have many photos to delete, but I still search the date and browse through the memories.

Today is a nice one, April 28th.

Then
Now

The 2025 photos and videos include ones of my students from last year during knitting club, so I won’t be posting them here, though they did make me smile.

I’m not sure if the reminder should still read “📸 Delete today’s photos,” since I’m not really deleting anymore but rather reminiscing, reconnecting, and forwarding the photos on to friends and families (as well as remembering to wish a best friend a happy anniversary).

I think I’ll keep it for now.

It makes me happy to have known you in all those moments captured in those photos. How corny, I know. But seeing you on Sunday felt so good, and it recharged me with friend love!!
Also, agree. This is such a good idea! Do you set the reminder yourself or is it a phone feature?
I love you friend, Happy Tuesday!!!

I made it a daily recurring reminder on my phone’s reminders app! I also have that app as a widget on my home screen so I see it whenever I unlock.
And yesss hehehe I’m a cornball, so I’m here for this. I love our drives, those crossed my mind as a slice idea too before I wrote this one! I love youuuu 💗💗

That’s a good practice to have, Amy. I really have to get better about deleting the multiple-takes of photos on a regular basis.

This is a really good idea and I am going to start doing it tomorrow! I have done a few purges, but as you note there is a lot of duplicate and unneeded images taking up space on myphone as well. Thank you sisncerely

Of course! I hope you enjoy the daily check-in 🙂 My texts to friends and family always begin “on this day _ year ago…”

This is something I really need to do. I am just afraid that I would get so caught up in remembering and reliving that I wouldn’t get very far in deleting.

    Amy,

This is both practical and sweet. I tried this for a few days a while back after reading a similar tip, but didn’t set a reminder like you did to make it a habit. Maybe I will try setting a reminder and also use your story about reminiscing as a motivating factor. Thanks!
