Writing With Abandon

Reflections and ramblings about life as an educator, writer, reader, knitter, and over-thinker. Trying to do the writing only I can do.

Sick Day

As a teacher, I don’t like to take days off from work.

Whether it’s for self care or a true sick day (like today), the thought of not coming in and showing up for your kids makes you feel even more ill.

Because teachers can’t just take a day when they’re not feeling well. We have to find subs and create sub plans, knowing all too well that most likely, we’ll need to reteach it anyway.

Luckily at my current school and at my last school, I’ve had co-teachers. That’s a game changer.

Still, there’s always a sense of guilt as you let them know they’ll be managing on their own for the day.

The only thing that makes it better is when you return the next day and the kids brighten and say, “Ms. Amy’s back!”

The teacher guilt is real! AND if I learned one thing from the pandemic is that YOU are important, too! You cannot be the best version of you, if you are not well. Take time to feel better. Your students will be okay–and you’re right the “Ms. Amy’s back!” makes you feel like a million bucks and that what you are doing matters! Feel better.

Absolutely! We have to take care of ourselves too. The pandemic made clear to me that the way I was teaching before was not sustainable. Not taking sick days being one of those things!

Fellow teacher using a sick day today 👋🏼 it’s a terrible thing that we feel this way for daring to take care of ourselves. Feel better!

You captured those feelings perfectly. I have had more sick days this year than I have had in my entire career and I learned that I need to take of myself first so I can be there to take care of the kids. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Welcome to the challenge!

I’m so sorry that you’ve had to take so many days! You’re completely right, though — we can’t be our best for the kids when we’re not feeling our best. Hope you stay happy and healthy the rest of the year, and if you need to take the day, you take it!

I hope you are feeling better. Isn’t it a game changer when you have a co-teacher. There are so many benefits to having a co-teacher but not having to write sub plans in so much detail is high on the list of benefits!

10000%!!! It’s just the cherry on top of a long list of benefits.
